ORANGE, N.J. - John E. Patterson, 46, died March 28, 2006, in Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, N.J., following a six-year battle with lymphoma.Surviving are three sons, Ian Patterson, Orange, N.J., and Corey Patterson and Jordan Patterson, both of Maplewood, N.J.; two sisters, Jo Patterson, Joliet, Ill., and Janice (and Ron) Rosenthal, Wilmette, Ill.; his fiancee, Cathy Cross, Carey, Ill.; and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Jeanne Lowe Patterson, a sister and a brother.
He was born and raised in Galesburg, Ill.
He was a 1981 graduate of Northwestern University.
He lived in Chicago and Maplewood, before moving to Orange.
He worked at Chicago Recording Co. before becoming a freelance engineer and producer in 1984. He had producer credits on projects for Frank Sinatra, John Secada, Peter, Paul and Mary, Chuck Mangione and others. He later worked as a recording engineer, technician and studio designer/builder for music producer Phil Ramone.
He joined Yamaha of America Corp. in 1997 where he served as research and development manager of its Commercial and Professional Audio Division.
He was a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science.
He was a songwriter and musician.
Private family service was April 1 at Stephen J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service, Lake Hiawatha, N.J. A servicee is planned for May.
