GALESBURG - Speed Street Custom Builds Inc. of Galesburg has unveiled its second 9/11 tribute motorcycle. The "Never Forget" bike will be raffled by America's 9/11 Foundation Inc.The motorcycle is the third in a series of tribute bikes the foundation has planned, with raffle proceeds going to benefit first responders' families all across the United States. Raffle tickets are $10 each and are available online at www.SpeedStreetCustomBuilds.com or www.Americas911Foundation.org (go to the Donations section, then to Index to find the raffle for the 2007 bike).
"The Speed Street team put more than parts and paint into building the last bike," said foundation president Ted Sjurseth. "You can see their pride in every detail and every inch of the bike making it much more special.
"The 2007 bike carries a very special piece of steel from the twin towers in the shape of a rugged iron cross. It has been built into the frame of the bike, making it a truly remarkable tribute to those we lost."
Each of the motorcycles has a theme; the 2007 model depicts the day after Sept. 11, 2001. The flighted front fender shows the smoke-filled skyline and fallen towers in the aftermath of flights 11 and 175 crashing into the World Trade Center towers. The iron cross is mounted in front of the engine; behind it is a smoke- and dust-filled scene of the fallen towers that can be back-lit.
The Pentagon juts out from under the seat and shows the crash impact site of flight 77 beside and American flag draped from the roof. The rear fender has a hole in it re-creating the crash site in Shanksville, Pa., of flight 93. The taillight is a keystone - symbol for the state of Pennsylvania. The gas tank features an eagle gripping the American flag in its talons. The seat has an embroidered insignia representing police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
